What Is the Purpose of a Blood Pressure Check?

The main purpose of a blood pressure check is to monitor your blood pressure levels during a particular visit. It’s not a long-term assessment, but rather a momentary reading that can give your pharmacist or doctor a clear picture of how your heart and arteries are functioning at that moment.

It’s particularly useful to:

  • Detect any unusual or sudden spikes in blood pressure.
  • Monitor existing high or low blood pressure conditions.
  • Track the effectiveness of lifestyle changes or medication.
  • Provide baseline readings during routine health visits.

How Often Should You Have a Blood Pressure Check?

Unlike blood pressure screenings, which are carried out regularly to detect potential issues in the general population, a check is typically done infrequently, for example, during a regular GP appointment or when visiting a pharmacy for another health concern.

If you are generally healthy and under 40, a blood pressure check every few years may be sufficient. However, if you are over 40 or at higher risk of hypertension, your healthcare provider may recommend more frequent monitoring.

What Happens During the Check?

The check is fast and completely painless. A cuff is placed around your upper arm and inflated, then slowly released while the machine records two readings:

  • Systolic Pressure – the pressure when your heart beats.
  • Diastolic Pressure – the pressure when your heart is resting between beats.

These readings help determine whether your blood pressure falls within a healthy range.
